In what year was Steve Jobs forced out of Apple?

The story behind the answer

Steve Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1985.

The conflict followed disagreements between Jobs and Apple chief executive John Sculley, whom Jobs had recruited from PepsiCo in 1983. After the Macintosh launch, the computer’s disappointing sales and internal disagreements increased tension between the two executives.

In 1985, Jobs attempted to reorganize Apple and remove Sculley, but the board supported Sculley instead. Jobs lost his operational responsibilities and then left the company later that year. He subsequently founded NeXT, a computer company focused on higher education and business workstations.

This date is sometimes confused with 1986, when Jobs purchased the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm and turned it into an independent company that became Pixar. Jobs returned to Apple only after Apple acquired NeXT in 1996; he became interim CEO in 1997.
