J.K. Rowling’s novel The Cuckoo’s Calling was first published in 2013.
The crime novel appeared under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith on 30 April 2013. It introduced Cormoran Strike, a private investigator and former military policeman, who examines the death of model Lula Landry. Robin Ellacott begins working for him during the investigation.
The book initially received attention as the work of an unknown debut crime writer. Rowling’s identity was revealed later in 2013, after a literary analysis and subsequent reporting connected her to the pseudonym. The disclosure caused a sharp increase in sales and public interest.
The novel became the first entry in the Cormoran Strike series. Its publication marked a major shift from Rowling’s earlier children’s fantasy writing to adult detective fiction. Later books continued the characters’ professional cases and their developing personal relationship.
