J.K. Rowling’s charity Lumos was founded in 2005.
The organization was originally established as the Children’s High Level Group, following concerns about children living in institutions and other harmful forms of segregated care. It was renamed Lumos in 2010. The name refers to the light-producing spell in the Harry Potter books.
Lumos works internationally to help replace institutional care for children with family- and community-based support. Its focus includes children separated from families, children with disabilities, and young people affected by poverty or crisis.
The charity is separate from Rowling’s fiction, although its name uses a recognizable element from the wizarding world. The organization’s work addresses real-world child welfare systems rather than promoting Harry Potter activities.
