Bob Marley was wounded in an assassination attempt in 1976. On December 3 of that year, armed gunmen attacked his home at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica.
The shooting happened two days before the planned Smile Jamaica concert, a free event intended to ease political tension between Jamaica’s rival political factions. Because Marley’s appearance was viewed by some as support for Prime Minister Michael Manley, the attack was widely believed to have been politically motivated.
Marley suffered gunshot wounds to his chest and arm. His wife, Rita Marley, and manager Don Taylor were also wounded, with Taylor seriously injured. Despite the attack, Marley performed at the concert on December 5, appearing with an injured arm.
The event is sometimes confused with later political violence surrounding Marley’s 1978 One Love Peace Concert. The assassination attempt itself occurred in 1976, making that the canonical answer.
