In what year did the series finale of Buffy air?

The story behind the answer

The series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired in 2003. The finale, titled “Chosen,” originally aired on UPN on May 20, 2003, concluding the show’s seventh and final television season.

“Chosen” is the 144th episode overall and the 22nd episode of season seven. In its story, Buffy and her allies confront the First Evil and its army of Turok-Han vampires beneath Sunnydale High. Buffy also activates the potential Slayers around the world, transforming the Slayer line and allowing many girls to share the power once held by one Slayer at a time.

The finale followed a series that premiered in 1997 and ran for seven seasons. Although Buffy’s television story ended in 2003, the franchise continued through officially licensed comic books, beginning with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight in 2007. A common mix-up is confusing the series finale with the end of a particular season: both the seventh-season finale and the series finale occurred in 2003.
