In what year did Johnny Cash die?

The story behind the answer

Johnny Cash died in 2003. He died on September 12, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 71, after complications from diabetes led to respiratory failure.

Cash’s death came less than four months after the death of his wife, June Carter Cash. The couple had been married since 1968 and were one of country music’s most celebrated partnerships. Cash was buried beside June at Hendersonville Memory Gardens near their home in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

The year 2003 is sometimes confused with 2002 because Cash’s health had already deteriorated and his final recordings were released around the same period. His final studio album, American IV: The Man Comes Around, appeared in 2002 and included his widely acclaimed cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” Cash’s posthumous releases and continuing cultural influence helped keep his work prominent after his death.

Born in 1932, Cash had a career spanning country, rockabilly, folk, gospel, and rock music. He remains known as the “Man in Black,” a nickname associated with his stage clothing and songs about social justice, hardship, faith, and redemption.
