J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book reached UK readers in 1997.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published by Bloomsbury on 26 June 1997. It introduced the characters, institutions, magical rules, and central conflict that Rowling expanded across six later novels. The first edition was aimed at children but soon gained a broad adult readership.
The book’s publication followed years of writing, revision, and rejection. Rowling conceived the idea of Harry Potter during a delayed train journey from Manchester to London in 1990. She then developed the story while living in Portugal, Edinburgh, and elsewhere before finding a publisher.
The American edition appeared in 1998 with the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. That later date can create confusion when people remember the first U.S. release instead of the original UK publication. The question concerns the first British publication, so 1997 is the relevant year. The novel’s success established Rowling as a major author and began the international expansion of the Wizarding World.
