J.K. Rowling’s charity began as the Children’s High Level Group in 2005.
Rowling helped establish the organization with the charity EveryChild after learning about children living in institutions in Eastern Europe. The group sought to improve conditions and encourage systems that keep children with families or place them in family-based care.
The organization later became Lumos, taking its name from the light-producing spell in the Harry Potter books. Its work expanded into campaigning, research, partnerships, and programs designed to replace institutional care with community services.
The year 2005 can be confused with later milestones, including the organization’s adoption of the Lumos name in 2010. It also differs from the 1997 launch of the first Harry Potter novel and the 2013 publication of Rowling’s first Galbraith mystery.
