J.K. Rowling received the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award in 2010. The Danish prize recognized her contribution to children’s literature.
The award is named after Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish author famous for fairy tales including “The Little Mermaid” and “The Ugly Duckling.” Rowling was the first recipient of the literature award, which was presented in Odense, Andersen’s birthplace.
The prize is not the same as the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, an international children’s literature honor administered by the International Board on Books for Young People. Similar names can make the two awards easy to confuse.
Rowling received many other honors during and after the Harry Potter series, including British and international book prizes. The 2010 award specifically recognized her literary contribution and linked her work with the broader tradition of writing for children.
