J.K. Rowling received the Companion of Honour in 2017 for services to literature and philanthropy.
The Order of the Companions of Honour is a British order established by King George V in 1917. It recognizes major achievements in the arts, science, medicine, or government. Membership is limited, making the honor one of the United Kingdom’s notable national distinctions.
Rowling’s appointment was announced in the 2017 Birthday Honours. The citation referred to her contributions to literature and charitable work. Her philanthropy includes support for multiple sclerosis research and Lumos, the organization working to improve care for disadvantaged children.
The Companion of Honour is different from a knighthood or damehood. Rowling was not made a dame when she received this honor. She had previously received other awards, including an appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2001.
