J.K. Rowling established Pottermore in 2011; the website was later renamed Wizarding World.
Pottermore was announced in June 2011 and opened to the public in 2012 after an earlier beta period. It offered interactive features, additional writing by Rowling and digital editions of the Harry Potter books.
The site was created with Sony and became an official online destination for information about the wizarding world. Its material included background details that were not all present in the original seven novels.
In 2019, Pottermore Publishing and Warner Bros. expanded the digital brand under the name Wizarding World Digital. The name change is why both labels appear in references to the same broader online franchise.
