In what year did J. K. Rowling receive the Order of the British Empire for services to children’s literature?

The story behind the answer

J. K. Rowling received the Order of the British Empire for services to children’s literature in 2001.

She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, commonly abbreviated OBE, in the 2001 Queen’s Birthday Honours. The honour recognized her contribution to children’s literature after the international success of the early Harry Potter books.

An OBE is a British order of chivalry award for contributions to the arts, sciences, public service, and other fields. Rowling’s 2001 appointment was not a knighthood and did not make her “Dame” Rowling. Her later honours are separate distinctions and should not be merged with the OBE.

The timing can be confused with the publication dates of the novels. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone appeared in 1997, while Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire appeared in 2000. Rowling received the OBE in 2001, after four novels had been published in Britain.
