Bob Marley performed at the One Love Peace Concert in 1978.
The concert took place on 22 April 1978 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. It was organized during a period of intense political violence between Jamaica's two major parties: Michael Manley's People's National Party and Edward Seaga's Jamaica Labour Party.
Marley's appearance was especially significant because it was his first performance in Jamaica since the 1976 Smile Jamaica concert, held just days after an assassination attempt at his home. During “Jamming,” Marley invited Manley and Seaga onto the stage and raised their joined hands in a powerful public gesture of unity.
The event is sometimes confused with Smile Jamaica, which happened in 1976, or with later Marley concerts. The One Love Peace Concert was a distinct 1978 event and featured many leading Jamaican performers, including Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Jacob Miller and Dennis Brown. Despite its historic symbolism, political violence in Jamaica continued after the concert.
