R is the single-letter name used by the zombie protagonist in Warm Bodies.
Jonathan Levine’s 2013 romantic zombie film is based on Isaac Marion’s 2010 novel. Nicholas Hoult plays R, an unusually reflective undead man who lives in an abandoned airport and struggles to describe his memories and emotions.
R’s life changes after he saves Julie Grigio, played by Teresa Palmer, during a raid. His growing connection with Julie begins a gradual transformation that affects both his behavior and his physical condition. The film uses this relationship to explore identity, empathy, and the possibility of recovery from social collapse.
The character’s name is intentionally incomplete. R cannot remember his full human name, and the film links the short name to his limited speech and fragmented memory. Warm Bodies is often described as both a zombie romance and a loose reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
