In “Toy Story,” Andy is the boy who owns the toys. Andy Davis is the human child whose toys—including Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Rex, Hamm, and Slinky Dog—come to life whenever people are not watching.
Andy’s attachment to the toys drives the original film and much of the series. Woody is his favorite toy at the beginning, but Buzz becomes an important companion after Andy receives him as a birthday present. Andy initially believes Buzz is a real space ranger, while Buzz does not realize he is a toy.
A common mix-up is choosing Woody or Buzz because they are the story’s best-known characters. They are toys, not the owner. Sid Phillips is another human child in the first film, but he is Andy’s neighbor and plays the role of a toy-destroying antagonist rather than the toys’ owner.
Across the series, Andy grows from a young child into a college-bound adult. In “Toy Story 3,” he gives his toys to Bonnie, passing them to a new child rather than simply throwing them away.
