Cacnea becomes James’s main Pokémon partner after Weezing in the Pokémon TV series.
James receives Cacnea during the Hoenn storyline. The Grass-type Pokémon quickly becomes recognizable for its affectionate habit of hugging James with its sharp arms, often causing him pain while expressing loyalty.
Cacnea is used by James in battles and comic schemes alongside Jessie and Meowth. Although it is not always strategically successful, its strong personality makes it one of James’s most memorable partners. James eventually leaves Cacnea with Gardenia, a Sinnoh Gym Leader, so it can develop its abilities more fully.
Carnivine later fills a similar role for James in Sinnoh, which can cause confusion. Weezing is James’s earlier Koffing evolution, while Growlie is the Growlithe associated with James’s childhood. Mime Jr. is another later companion, but Cacnea is the answer for the period after Weezing.
