In The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the Fellowship is formed at the elven refuge of Rivendell.
Rivendell is the household of Elrond, an important elf lord and the father of Arwen. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo reaches Rivendell after being wounded by a Morgul blade. Elrond’s healing saves him, and representatives of several peoples later gather there to debate what should happen to the One Ring.
The Council of Elrond decides that the Ring must be destroyed in Mordor. The group that accepts this mission becomes the Fellowship of the Ring. Rivendell is sometimes confused with Lothlórien, another elven realm visited later in the story. Lothlórien is ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn, while Rivendell is connected with Elrond. In the films, Rivendell also provides the setting for Bilbo’s birthday poem and the departure of the Fellowship.
