Nine members make up the Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings films.
The Fellowship consists of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. They are formed to protect Frodo and help move the One Ring toward its destruction.
The number is deliberately connected to the nine Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths who serve Sauron. The Fellowship’s members represent several peoples and traditions of Middle-earth: hobbits, Men, an Elf, a Dwarf, and a wizard.
The group does not remain together for the entire trilogy. Boromir dies and the company divides near the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. Later films follow separate groups whose actions contribute to the defeat of Sauron.
