In The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Gollum guides Frodo and Sam across the Dead Marshes.
Gollum was once a Hobbit-like river person named Sméagol. The One Ring transformed his body and mind over centuries, leaving him obsessed with the object he calls his “precious.” In The Two Towers, Frodo and Sam capture him near the Emyn Muil and force him to guide them toward the Black Gate of Mordor.
Gollum knows paths through the Dead Marshes, a dangerous wetland filled with stagnant water and ghostly faces beneath its surface. Although he helps the hobbits cross, his loyalty is unstable because he wants the Ring for himself. The films present Gollum through a combination of digital effects and Andy Serkis’s performance. He is sometimes confused with an Orc or a monster, but his origin as a corrupted former Ring-bearer is central to the trilogy’s moral story.
