Nine members originally form the Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
The Fellowship is established at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell to help carry the One Ring toward Mordor. Its nine members are Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf.
The group is deliberately presented as a counterweight to the nine Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths serving Sauron. This symbolic correspondence is stated in Tolkien’s story and retained in the film adaptation. The Fellowship therefore combines representatives of hobbits, Men, elves, dwarves, and Maiar.
The Fellowship does not remain together for the entire trilogy. Boromir dies after the group is attacked at Amon Hen, while Frodo and Sam continue separately toward Mordor. The remaining members later pursue different missions, but the original number remains nine.
