In “The Lion King,” the hyena leader is Shenzi.
Shenzi is the female leader of the trio of spotted hyenas who serve Scar. She lives in the Elephant Graveyard with Banzai and Ed, and the three become Scar’s allies in his plan to overthrow Mufasa and seize control of the Pride Lands.
Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed help trigger the wildebeest stampede that kills Mufasa and later chase Simba away on Scar’s orders. When Simba returns to confront Scar, the hyenas are present during the collapse of Scar’s rule. Scar attempts to blame them for the kingdom’s suffering, but they turn against him and the pack kills him during the resulting fire.
The names are easy to mix up because the three hyenas usually appear together. Banzai is the aggressive, hot-headed member, while Ed is the dim-witted hyena who communicates mainly through laughter. In the 2019 remake, Shenzi remains the leader, but Banzai and Ed are replaced by differently named characters, Kamari and Azizi.
