In the 2002 film Resident Evil, the underground facility where the outbreak begins is called the Hive.
The Hive is a secret laboratory complex beneath Raccoon City operated by the Umbrella Corporation. It houses advanced biotechnology laboratories and contains the supercomputer Red Queen, which controls the facility. The T-virus is developed there as part of Umbrella’s research program.
After the virus escapes, the Red Queen seals the Hive and kills its personnel to prevent the infection from spreading. Alice and the other survivors enter the facility while investigating the deaths connected to the laboratory. The film then follows their attempt to reach the surface.
The Hive is a fictional location created for the film rather than a location copied directly from a real-world laboratory. It is also distinct from the Spencer Mansion, a major setting in the original Resident Evil video game.
