In the 1992 film Braindead, what is the name of Lionel Cosgrove’s mother?
Answer
Vera Cosgrove
Answer
Vera Cosgrove
In the 1992 film Braindead, Lionel Cosgrove’s mother is named Vera Cosgrove.
Vera is the overbearing parent whose death begins the film’s escalating chain of zombie transformations. After she is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey at Wellington Zoo, Lionel tries to conceal her worsening condition and keep his romance with Paquita Salas private.
The film was directed by Peter Jackson before his international breakthrough with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Its extreme splatter effects, deliberately excessive comedy, and elaborate finale made it a landmark of New Zealand horror cinema. In the United States, it was released under the title Dead Alive.
The title can therefore create a naming mix-up: viewers may know the movie as Dead Alive, but Vera Cosgrove is the same character in both releases. Elizabeth Moody played Vera, while Timothy Balme played Lionel.
