In the 1978 film Dawn of the Dead, what shopping center becomes the survivors' refuge?

The story behind the answer

Monroeville Mall becomes the survivors' refuge in the 1978 film Dawn of the Dead.

George A. Romero's sequel follows television traffic reporter Stephen, helicopter pilot Peter, police officer Roger, and traffic producer Francine as they flee the spreading undead outbreak. They discover the largely empty shopping center and turn it into a fortified shelter.

The mall setting gives the film its central social satire. The wandering dead repeatedly return to the stores, while the living fill the same space with consumer goods and routines. Filming took place at the real Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. The location is often confused with fictional shopping centers from later zombie films.
