In Ted Lasso season 4, multiple ACL injuries ended Alice Chilton’s football career.
Alice is introduced as an assistant coach for Richmond’s women’s team and as a former professional midfielder. Her difficult relationship with Ted is partly shaped by the fact that her playing career ended after several anterior cruciate ligament injuries in quick succession.
The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, is a major stabilizing ligament in the knee. Repeated injuries can require surgery, lengthy rehabilitation and difficult decisions about returning to competitive sport. The series uses Alice’s experience to explain why she approaches coaching with such intensity.
The injury detail is distinct from Alice’s former position. She played as a midfielder before moving into coaching, but it was the succession of ACL injuries that ended her career. The storyline also links Alice to Richmond’s injured lead striker, prompting Ted to learn more about her past.
