In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the single-player mode where you fight a series of opponents is Classic Mode.
Classic Mode presents a sequence of battles selected around the character the player chooses, followed by a climactic fight against Master Hand. The route is designed as a compact arcade-style campaign: players defeat opponents, manage their remaining stocks and damage, and progress through several themed encounters before the final boss.
Melee was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001 and expanded the original Super Smash Bros. with several distinct solo activities. Classic Mode was separate from Adventure Mode, which added side-scrolling sections and locations inspired by Nintendo franchises. It was also different from All-Star Mode, where the objective is to defeat the entire playable roster with limited healing resources.
Classic Mode became one of the series’ most recognizable features and returned in later games. Its details changed over time: later entries could use character-specific routes, random opponents, or additional bosses, but the central idea remained a succession of fights leading to a finale.
