The main story of Resident Evil 5 takes place in 2009.
The game follows Chris Redfield, now working for the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, during a mission in the fictional African region of Kijuju. He is partnered with Sheva Alomar, a BSAA agent. Their investigation concerns biological weapons activity and the suspected involvement of former S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine.
The 2009 setting places Resident Evil 5 after the events of Resident Evil 4, which is set in 2004. It also reflects the series’ continuing timeline of escalating bioterrorism after the destruction of Raccoon City and the collapse of Umbrella Corporation.
Resident Evil 5 was released in March 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with a Windows version following later that year. Its cooperative campaign was a major change from earlier mainline entries, allowing two players to fight through the story together.
