Resident Evil 4 is set in Spain.
The game follows Leon S. Kennedy as he travels to a rural region of Spain to rescue Ashley Graham, the kidnapped daughter of the United States president. Its villages, castle, church, and surrounding countryside establish a setting distinct from the urban environments of earlier games.
The Spanish setting is sometimes confused with the game's fictional locations, because the story does not identify a real town for most of the action. The game's dialogue also uses Spanish words and phrases, reinforcing the location without making every place name real-world.
Resident Evil 4 was first released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube and later appeared on many other platforms. Its European setting helped the game shift away from the mansion and police-station atmosphere associated with earlier entries while retaining the series' survival-horror themes.
