In Resident Evil 4, what title is commonly used for the mysterious shopkeeper?

The mysterious shopkeeper in Resident Evil 4 is commonly called The Merchant.

The Merchant appears at several points during Leon S. Kennedy’s journey and offers weapons, upgrades, ammunition, healing items, and other equipment. Players can pay him with pesetas, the currency used in the game, and can also sell treasures and unwanted items.

He is notable for his concealed face, distinctive purple clothing, repeated greeting, and ability to appear in isolated locations throughout the Spanish setting. His presence gives players opportunities to reorganize their inventory and improve equipment between combat encounters.

The Merchant is usually identified by this title rather than a personal name. Some players may confuse him with characters such as Luis Serra or Ramon Salazar, but neither is the recurring vendor. The 2023 remake retains the Merchant as an important gameplay character while changing some of his dialogue, presentation, and available services.
