Paul is Ash’s major rival in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, and he uses Torterra as one of his notable Pokémon. Paul is an experienced trainer from the Sinnoh region whose strict, results-focused approach contrasts with Ash’s emphasis on friendship and individual growth.
Paul’s Torterra begins as a Turtwig and later evolves through Grotle into Torterra. It is one of Paul’s strongest and most recognizable team members. Paul also owns Pokémon such as Electivire, Ursaring, Drapion, and Magmortar during the Sinnoh storyline.
The rivalry develops through repeated battles and disagreements about training methods. Paul often releases Pokémon he considers insufficiently strong, while Ash believes dedicated training can help Pokémon improve. Their conflict reaches its climax at the Lily of the Valley Conference.
Paul is not the same character as Barry, another Sinnoh rival who appears later in the series. Conway and Nando are also recurring Sinnoh competitors, but Paul is the rival most closely tied to Ash’s central Diamond and Pearl rivalry.
