The original region in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow is called Kanto.
Kanto is the setting for the first-generation games and contains familiar locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Celadon City, and the Pokémon League. Players travel through the region while earning Gym Badges and building a team.
The region’s name was later reused for a real-world connection: Kanto is also the name of the area surrounding Tokyo on Japan’s main island of Honshu. Pokémon’s Kanto is a fictionalized game map rather than a literal geographic reproduction, but several place names and environmental ideas reflect Japan.
Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because Pokémon Gold and Silver connect the two regions in one adventure. Johto belongs to the second generation, while Kanto is the setting associated with the original 1996 games and their later remakes.
