Which Pokémon designer is credited with creating Pikachu?

The story behind the answer

Atsuko Nishida is credited with creating Pikachu.

Nishida designed Pikachu during development of the first Pokémon games. The character was conceived as an Electric-type Pokémon and given a distinctive yellow body, red cheek patches, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.

Ken Sugimori illustrated the final official artwork and helped establish the visual presentation of the original Pokémon. Because Sugimori is strongly associated with the franchise's art direction, he is sometimes incorrectly named as Pikachu's sole designer.

Pikachu became especially prominent after being selected as Ash's partner in the anime. Its compact shape, expressive face, and repeated appearances made it Pokémon's most recognizable mascot. The character's name combines Japanese sound-related words associated with sparkling electricity and squeaking.
