Which Nintendo system originally played Pokémon Red and Green?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red and Green originally played on the Game Boy.

Nintendo released the first Pokémon games in Japan for its monochrome handheld system on 27 February 1996. The Game Boy’s large installed audience and link-cable capability helped the games reach players who could exchange Pokémon and battle with friends.

The system’s technical limitations shaped the original presentation. The games used black-and-white graphics, although later Game Boy Color hardware could display them with color palettes. Pokémon Yellow was subsequently designed to make greater use of the Game Boy Color’s capabilities and to reflect the anime’s popularity.

The original titles are sometimes described as Game Boy Color games because they run on that later hardware, but their initial platform was the Game Boy. International Pokémon Red and Blue also launched for the Game Boy, preserving the same basic platform and link-based trading system.
