What Pokédex number is assigned to Mew?

The story behind the answer

Mew is assigned Pokédex number 151.

Mew is the final entry in the original Generation I Pokédex, following Mewtwo at number 150. It is a Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon described as possessing the genetic makeup of every Pokémon, which explains its unusual ability to learn many different moves in the games.

Mew was not normally obtainable through standard gameplay in the original Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue versions. Its hidden presence became famous after Game Freak added it late in development and distributed it through special events and promotions. That secrecy helped fuel rumors and made Mew a particularly memorable part of early Pokémania.

Mew is often confused with Mewtwo because their names and lore are connected. Mewtwo is an artificial clone created from Mew's genetic material, but Mew is the earlier Pokédex entry and number 151. Later generations expanded the National Pokédex far beyond the original 151 entries.
