In Pixar’s Toy Story, the battery-powered toy soldiers’ commander is Sarge.
Sarge leads the green plastic army men who conduct reconnaissance missions in Andy’s house. He communicates with the troops through military-style commands and directs their operation to identify Andy’s birthday presents. The soldiers’ mission gives Woody an early clue that a new toy has arrived before the other toys learn Buzz Lightyear’s identity.
Sarge is a compact green army figure, while the group around him consists of many nearly identical plastic soldiers. That visual similarity can make the commander’s name easy to overlook. The soldiers are not officially part of Andy’s main bedroom group, but they cooperate with Woody and the other toys.
Toy Story’s army-men sequence is one of the film’s memorable examples of toys using their real-world play features as equipment. The plastic soldiers’ parachute drop also combines comic action with the film’s central idea that toys become alive when humans are absent.
