In Pixar’s Cars, which veteran racer becomes Lightning McQueen’s mentor?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars, Doc Hudson becomes Lightning McQueen’s mentor.

Doc is the town doctor and judge in Radiator Springs, but he once had a celebrated racing career. He was the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a three-time Piston Cup champion whose racing number was 51. His experience gives him a perspective that McQueen lacks: winning races is not the same as understanding racing, friendship, or responsibility.

Doc initially dislikes McQueen’s arrogance and tries to keep his own past private. As McQueen repairs the damaged road and spends more time in town, Doc gradually recognizes the rookie’s potential. He eventually helps McQueen prepare for the Piston Cup finale and takes pride in his progress.

Doc Hudson was voiced by Paul Newman, whose real-life interest in motor racing made the role especially notable. Newman died in 2008, so Doc’s later appearances use archival material or different voice performers. The character remains one of the franchise’s most important links between racing history and McQueen’s future.
