In Pixar’s Cars, the retired racer who becomes Radiator Springs’ judge and town doctor is Doc Hudson.
Doc is a 1951 Hudson Hornet who once competed as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. He won three Piston Cups and was known for his skill on the track before a crash ended his racing career. The town’s residents respect him, although he initially distrusts Lightning McQueen’s attitude.
Doc’s history gives Lightning an important lesson about fame, injury, and how racing organizations can move on from a competitor. Doc eventually helps Lightning prepare for the final race and becomes a mentor figure.
The character is voiced by Paul Newman, whose own association with motorsport helped shape the role’s appeal. Doc Hudson is fictional, but the Fabulous Hudson Hornet name refers to a real car associated with early stock-car racing.
