In Pixar's Cars, which racer wins the final Piston Cup after Lightning McQueen refuses to finish the race alone?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar's Cars, Chick Hicks wins the final Piston Cup after Lightning McQueen refuses to finish the race alone.

Lightning reaches the final race tied with veteran champion Strip Weathers, also known as The King, and perennial rival Chick Hicks. When Lightning stops to help The King after Hicks causes him to crash, Lightning gives up the chance to cross the finish line first. Hicks then wins the race and receives the Piston Cup.

The victory is widely remembered as hollow because the crowd boos Hicks and celebrates Lightning's sportsmanship instead. Lightning also persuades the sponsor Dinoco to keep The King as its racing representative, while Lightning remains with Rust-eze.

A common mix-up is to name Lightning as the winner because he dominates much of the film's racing story. He does not win that final race, although his decision earns him greater respect than the official result gives Hicks.
