In Pixar’s Cars, which fictional race does Lightning McQueen enter?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars, Lightning McQueen enters the fictional Piston Cup race series.

The Piston Cup is the major stock-car championship in the film’s world. At the beginning of the story, Lightning is a highly successful rookie who has tied with veteran racer The King and Chick Hicks for the championship lead. The final race is scheduled in California, but Lightning’s careless behavior causes him to become stranded in Radiator Springs.

The championship format and visual presentation draw on American stock-car racing, especially NASCAR, while the Piston Cup itself is an invented competition. Lightning’s desire to win the cup drives the plot, but his time in Radiator Springs changes his priorities.

The Piston Cup should not be confused with the World Grand Prix, which is the international competition at the center of Cars 2. Dinoco is a sponsor and racing team, not the name of the championship.
