In Pixar's Cars, the retired race car who trains Lightning McQueen is Doc Hudson.
Doc is a 1951 Hudson Hornet who lives quietly in Radiator Springs while serving as the town's physician and judge. McQueen initially assumes Doc is merely an old local car, but he later discovers that Doc was once a highly successful racer known as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet.
Doc's racing career ended after a serious crash and the loss of public attention. His experience gives him a different perspective from McQueen, whose early career is driven by publicity and individual glory. Doc reluctantly becomes McQueen's crew chief and teaches him that racing skill involves more than speed, including control, patience, and awareness of the track.
Doc is voiced by Paul Newman in Cars and Cars 3. The character is also a tribute to the real Hudson Hornet, a car celebrated for its success in early stock-car racing, especially during NASCAR's formative years.
