In Pixar’s Cars, what type of vehicle is Fillmore?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars, Fillmore is a Volkswagen Type 2 van.

Fillmore is Radiator Springs’ peace-loving hippie character and the owner of Fillmore’s Taste-In, where he sells organic fuel. His rounded body, split windshield, and distinctive front design identify him as a Volkswagen Type 2, commonly called a Transporter, Microbus, or Kombi. The character’s name also echoes the historical association between Volkswagen vans and 1960s counterculture.

Fillmore’s design is easy to confuse with a Volkswagen Beetle because both are iconic Volkswagen vehicles. However, the Beetle is a compact rounded car, while the Type 2 is a larger van with a tall, boxier body. The film pairs Fillmore with Sarge, a military-style Willys Jeep, creating a visual contrast between counterculture and military tradition.

Fillmore is voiced by George Carlin in the first Cars film. His partner, Sarge, runs Sarge’s Surplus Hut across the street from Fillmore’s Taste-In.
