In Pixar’s Cars, Radiator Springs is the sleepy Arizona town where Lightning McQueen repairs the road.
Lightning reaches the town after being separated from his transport truck and accidentally damaging its main road. A court order requires him to stay and repair the pavement, placing the ambitious rookie racer among residents who value friendship and local history more than publicity.
Radiator Springs is presented as a fictional community along the historic U.S. Route 66. Its decline follows the construction of Interstate 40, which diverts travelers away from the old highway. The film uses that change to explain why the town’s businesses and traffic have faded.
The setting is inspired by real Route 66 locations, especially towns in the American Southwest. Nearby landmarks and scenery also echo the work of Route 66 historians and travel writers. The town should not be confused with Ornament Valley, the broader landscape surrounding it, or with Motorville, Lightning’s original home.
