Smokey is introduced in Thomasville, Georgia, where he helps McQueen reconnect with the racing methods and experience of the late Doc Hudson. He leads McQueen through practical exercises instead of relying only on modern simulator technology.
The character is closely tied to Doc’s past. Smokey was Doc’s crew chief and friend during the older racer’s racing career, so he can explain how Doc adapted after his own competitive life changed.
This role distinguishes Smokey from McQueen’s other supporters. Cruz Ramirez trains him at the Rust-eze facility, while Smokey provides historical knowledge and emotional guidance. Smokey is voiced by Chris Cooper, whose performance gives the veteran mechanic a calm, rural personality.
