In Pixar’s Cars 3, which rookie racer becomes Lightning McQueen’s student?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars 3, Cruz Ramirez becomes Lightning McQueen’s student.

Cruz begins the film as a high-performance trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. Although she is not initially presented as a top-level racer, she has strong driving ability and a deep enthusiasm for racing. Lightning’s training program gradually reveals that Cruz may have the talent to compete herself.

The relationship reverses the franchise’s earlier mentor pattern. In the first Cars, Doc Hudson guides Lightning; in Cars 3, Lightning ultimately guides Cruz while learning how to adapt to a younger generation of racers. Their partnership is central to the film’s theme of passing experience forward.

Cruz is voiced in English by Cristela Alonzo. She drives a yellow race car and later takes over Lightning’s competitive opportunity at the Florida 500, making her an important new lead in the series.
