In Pixar’s Cars 3, Cruz Ramirez replaces Lightning McQueen as the Rust-eze team’s driver.
Cruz begins as a highly skilled trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She is assigned to help McQueen prepare for a new generation of faster racers, especially the dominant rookie Jackson Storm.
After Cruz discovers her own racing ability, McQueen supports her entry into competition. She eventually becomes the Rust-eze team’s active racer, while McQueen takes on a mentor role. This change forms the emotional resolution of Cars 3 rather than simply presenting another victory for McQueen.
Cruz is voiced by Cristela Alonzo. Her character also expands the franchise’s idea of who can become a champion: success depends on opportunity, confidence and support as well as speed.
