In Pixar’s Cars 3, Cruz Ramirez becomes Lightning McQueen’s trainer.
Cruz works at the Rust-eze Racing Center, where she uses modern training methods, simulators, and data to prepare racers. Although she initially approaches McQueen as a professional assignment, her relationship with him develops as they confront the gap between his experience and the speed of newer competitors.
Cruz is more than a supporting coach. She has her own ambition to become a racer, but she has been discouraged from pursuing it because others view her primarily as a trainer. McQueen eventually recognizes her ability and gives her an opportunity to compete.
The story’s final race changes their roles. Cruz takes McQueen’s place and uses both her own talent and lessons learned from him to challenge Jackson Storm. Her success gives Cars 3 a generational theme: experience can be passed on without disappearing, while new competitors deserve the chance to define their own careers. Cruz’s yellow design also contrasts with McQueen’s familiar red appearance.
