In Pixar’s Cars (2006), who voices Lightning McQueen?

The story behind the answer

Owen Wilson voices Lightning McQueen in Pixar’s Cars (2006).

Lightning McQueen is the film’s ambitious rookie race car, introduced as a talented but self-centered competitor in the Piston Cup series. Wilson’s relaxed, energetic delivery helped define the character’s initially overconfident personality and later emotional growth.

The film follows McQueen after he becomes stranded near Radiator Springs, a fictional town on historic Route 66. There, friendships with Mater, Sally Carrera, Doc Hudson, and other residents change his priorities. A common mix-up is confusing the voice of McQueen with the voice of Mater, who is played by Larry the Cable Guy.

Wilson returned as McQueen’s voice in Cars 2 and Cars 3, as well as related Pixar short films and games. The character’s design combines features associated with stock cars and modern racing vehicles, while his name is a tribute to actor and racer Steve McQueen.
