In Pixar’s Cars 2, Lightning McQueen’s best friend and traveling companion is Mater.
Mater is a rusty tow truck from Radiator Springs, where he first meets McQueen during Cars. In Cars 2, Mater leaves Radiator Springs with McQueen and becomes involved in the international World Grand Prix and its espionage storyline. His innocent, unconventional behavior causes trouble, but it also helps him notice clues that more polished characters overlook.
The friendship is central to the film’s emotional structure. McQueen initially becomes embarrassed by Mater’s behavior at public events, while Mater feels out of place among the racers, spies, and celebrities. Their conflict tests their loyalty before they reconcile.
Mater is voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, whose performance gives the character his distinctive rural American humor and speech patterns. Mater’s official name is Tow Mater, a pun on “tomater,” and his design is inspired by old tow trucks. He later became a major character in Pixar’s Cars shorts and television specials.
