In Pixar’s Cars 2, what is the name of the international racing competition?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars 2, the international racing competition is called the World Grand Prix.

The World Grand Prix is organized by Miles Axlerod to promote Allinol, an alternative fuel. Lightning McQueen enters the event and races in three locations: Porto Corsa in Italy, Tokyo in Japan, and London in the United Kingdom.

The competition gives Cars 2 a global setting that differs sharply from the small-town focus of the first film. It also provides the public backdrop for the film’s spy plot, in which Mater is mistaken for an undercover agent and becomes involved with Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell.

The World Grand Prix should not be confused with the Piston Cup. The Piston Cup is the domestic stock-car championship associated with McQueen’s earlier career, whereas the World Grand Prix is an international road-racing event. Cars 2 was released in 2011.
