In Madagascar, the zebra who leaves the Central Park Zoo is Marty.
Marty is one of the four central zoo animals whose accidental journey drives the 2005 DreamWorks Animation film. He becomes dissatisfied with the routine of captivity and dreams of seeing the wild, prompting his escape attempt on his tenth birthday. Alex, Gloria, and Melman follow him, and the group is eventually transported to Madagascar.
Marty is voiced by Chris Rock in the English-language version. His black-and-white stripes and energetic personality make him visually distinct from Alex the lion, Gloria the hippopotamus, and Melman the giraffe.
A common mix-up is confusing Marty with Stefano, a sea lion introduced in Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. Marty belongs to the original New York zoo group and appears throughout the main Madagascar film series.
